Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about getting started with hallmarking in India.

Is hallmarking mandatory for all gold jewellery in India?

Yes, BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery of 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, and 24K sold in districts covered by the mandatory hallmarking order. As of 2025, 373 districts across India are covered. Exemptions apply to articles below 2 grams, jewellery for export, and certain specific categories.

How do I register for BIS hallmarking as a jeweller?

Register on the BIS portal at manakonline.in. You will need to upload your PAN card, GST certificate, address proof, and photographs of your premises. Registration is typically processed within 7–10 working days after document verification.

Is silver hallmarking mandatory in India?

Silver hallmarking with HUID is currently voluntary in India. However, the BIS has established the framework under IS 2112:2025 with seven purity grades, and mandatory silver hallmarking is widely expected to be introduced in the near future.

How can I verify a HUID code?

Download the free BIS Care app from the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS). Register with your mobile number, then tap 'Verify HUID' and enter the six-digit alphanumeric code engraved on the article. The app will display the jeweller's name and BIS registration number, the hallmarking centre that tested the article, the purity grade, article type, and date of hallmarking. There is currently no web-based verification tool — the BIS Care app is the only official consumer method.

How long does the hallmarking process take?

At Varsha Bullion Hallmarking Centres, most gold articles are tested, assigned a HUID, and hallmarked within the same day or next working day, depending on the volume submitted. Silver and bullion testing timelines are similar.

What happens if my gold article fails the purity test?

If an article does not meet the declared purity grade, it is not hallmarked and is returned to the jeweller or manufacturer with a test report indicating the actual composition. The article can be refined and resubmitted for testing.
