Getting Started for Consumers

Learn how to check hallmarks visually, verify HUID codes using the BIS Care app, and know your rights when buying gold or silver.

Why it matters

Hallmarking protects you from fraud — it guarantees that the gold or silver you buy has been independently tested and verified for purity.

HUID verification lets you trace any hallmarked article back to the testing centre and the jeweller, giving you recourse if something is wrong.

Hallmarked jewellery retains better resale value because buyers and jewellers trust BIS-verified purity over self-declarations.

What to look for

Step-by-step process

1

Check the hallmark visually

Look for three marks on the jewellery: the BIS logo (a triangle), the purity/fineness grade (e.g. 916 for 22K gold), and the six-digit alphanumeric HUID. All three must be present on any hallmarked gold or silver article.

2

Download the BIS Care app

Search for 'BIS CARE' on the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS) and install it — the app is free. Open the app and register with your name and mobile number. You will receive an OTP for verification. The app supports 12 languages.

3

Verify the HUID in the app

On the BIS Care home screen, tap 'Verify HUID'. Enter the six-digit alphanumeric HUID code that is laser-engraved on the jewellery, then tap Search. The app connects to the central BIS database and fetches the hallmarking record for that article.

4

Review the verification results

The app displays the jeweller's name and BIS registration number, the Assaying & Hallmarking Centre (AHC) that tested the article, the article type (ring, chain, bangle, etc.), the purity grade (e.g. 22K/916), and the date of hallmarking. Compare these details with your purchase invoice.

5

Check the invoice details

Ensure the invoice mentions the HUID for each article, the purity grade, the net weight of gold or silver, and the jeweller's BIS registration number. A proper invoice is essential for warranty claims, resale, and any future disputes.

6

Know your rights and file complaints

Under the BIS Act, selling non-hallmarked gold jewellery in mandatory districts is illegal. If the HUID is invalid or the details do not match, do not buy the article. You can file a complaint directly through the BIS Care app, call the BIS helpline at 14100, or approach the consumer forum. You will receive a reference number for tracking.
