Understanding HUID: The Hallmark Unique Identification Number

The Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID) is a six-character alphanumeric code assigned to every hallmarked gold and silver article in India. Introduced by BIS in 2021, it replaces the previous jeweller's identification mark and provides complete traceability.

How HUID Works

When an article passes assaying at an authorized hallmarking centre, BIS assigns a unique HUID through its online portal. This number is then physically stamped or laser-engraved on the article alongside the BIS logo and fineness number.

Verifying a HUID

Consumers and jewellers can verify any HUID through:

  • BIS Care App — available on iOS and Android
  • BIS website — online verification portal
  • SMS — by sending the HUID to the designated BIS number

Verification reveals the article's purity, the hallmarking centre that tested it, and the date of hallmarking.

Why HUID Matters

HUID creates end-to-end traceability: every hallmarked article can be traced back to the specific hallmarking centre and the exact date it was tested. This accountability improves trust across the entire supply chain — from manufacturer to retailer to consumer.

For Jewellers

Jewellers must ensure all articles are HUID-compliant before sale. Working with a reliable, BIS-authorized hallmarking centre ensures smooth HUID assignment and compliance with current regulations.
