HUID stands for Hallmark Unique Identification Number. It is a six-character alphanumeric code introduced by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in July 2021 as part of the mandatory hallmarking framework for gold and silver jewellery.
The HUID replaces the older jeweller's identification mark. Unlike the previous system, where the mark only identified the jeweller, the HUID uniquely identifies each individual article, making every hallmarked piece traceable from the hallmarking centre to the end consumer.
When an article passes purity testing (assaying) at a BIS-authorized hallmarking centre, BIS assigns a unique HUID through its online portal. This number is then physically stamped or laser-engraved on the article alongside the BIS logo and fineness number.
